Cats Preparing for Banner 2016 Season

El Nino has taken a break, the field has dried up, and the Los Gatos High School softball teams are busy at work preparing for the 2016 season.

This year's varsity team will try and improve on its 17-12 record from a year ago and quarter-final appearance in the CCS finals. Six seniors will lead the way for Los Gatos: captains Madeline Colombo, Maddy Lucey and Camille Hench along with Sydney Tucker, Julianna Callahan and Emma Rochel.

Junior starters returning include Shelby Copper, Nicole DalCielo and Sarah Storton. Other returning juniors are Maila Ruggiero and Macie Manion. Joining the team from last year's championship JV squad are juniors Jocie Potmesil, Makenna Moore and Maddie Laskey, along with sophomore Serafina Johnson.

Eight freshman will join the program this year and play JV: Ava Currie, Virginia Herr, Rachel Ice-Crespo, Amber Kelly, Sarah Lasher, Maddie  Moore, Jordan Pache and Alexa Wong. Returning sophomores are tri-captains Annika Briski, Macy Zech and Erin Kiuttu along with Natalie Mercik, and Audrey Wehner joins the program as a new sophomore.

Both varsity and JV will open the season with scrimmages at San Lorenzo Valley High School on Tuesday, February 23. The teams will play a second scrimmage on Friday, February 26 at Pioneer. The season officially opens on Thursday, March 3 with the varsity playing at Prospect and the JV hosting the Panthers.

Banner Orders Needed by Feb 17!

LGHS Softball Tryout Schedule

Tryouts for the Los Gatos High School softball program will be held beginning today at 2:30 p.m.

All players will tryout together on Monday from 2:30 p.m. to 4:45 p.m.

On Tuesday, Players whose last name begins with the letters A through K will work out from 2:30 to 3:45 p.m. Players whose last name begins with the letters L through Z will work out from 3:45 to 5 p.m.

On Wednesday, times will be reversed for the two groups. Players whose last name begins with the letters L through Z will work out from 2:30 to 3:45 p.m. Players whose last name begins with the letters A through K will work out from 3:45 to 5 p.m.

On Thursday, all players will work out from 2:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. We will have an intrasquad scrimmage on Thursday.

Friday's schedule will be announced later this week.

Thank You Work Party Volunteers

The coaches would like to give a big thank you to everyone who came down to the field Saturday to help with the annual Field Cleanup Day.

We are ready to play.

Players will walk back to a new outfield fence, covered batting cage, and cleaned out storage areas. The infield is in fantastic shape, dugouts are clean, and there is plenty of room for player equipment bags in the storage room.

While cleaning out the shed, we discovered two "Wildcat Pride" softball banners. They are now proudly hanging on the backstop.

The facility looks better than it ever has. Let the games begin!

Covering of Bullpen Complete

Let the rains return. It will not affect our ability to keep practicing.

A huge thanks to Spero Koulouras for his efforts in designing and erecting our new bullpen covering. Coaches and Spero were down at the field Saturday putting on the finishing touches, and it looks great.

The covered bullpen will allow us to practice even when it rains. Three pitchers and catchers will be able to throw at one time. Hitters can work on stations with bow nets or whiffle balls. There is even room for live ground balls on real dirt.

This is the latest in a list of recent field improvements designed to help take the Los Gatos High School softball program to the next level.

2015 January Player Clinics Schedule

I am thrilled to see that 23 players want to participate in our January clinics. Remember, these are one-hour sessions limited to four players per session. Below is the schedule, which I will also post on our team website (link below under Wildcat Softball). I have scheduled one clinic per interested player. If you are interested in any of the open slots, let me know. Open slots are highlighted in green. Also, if you cannot make any of your assigned slots, please let me know well in advance so I have time to fill it with another player. 

Players can attend no more than two on-field clinics per week. On days you are not on field, we will still have conditioning from 2:30-3:30 p.m. Cardio on Mondays and Wednesdays, and weights on Tuesdays and Thursdays. So, there is something softball-related Monday through Thursday all January.

Field Improvements to Greet Players in 2015

Following a successful fundraiser in 2014, players returning for the 2015 season will walk into a much-improved facility in 2015.

Gone is the mud, and in its place is 10 yards of rock that will make life at the field much more pleasurable for players, coaches and fans.

Rock has been layed from the foot path all the way to the equipment shed and over to the batting cage. Now, following a rain, we will not have to sludge around in the mud for three days. And stepping stones were added to the dugout entrance to replace the plywood and rubber mat.

Plans are also underway to cover the bullpen, which will allow workouts to be held during the rain. Not only will pitchers be able to throw, ground balls can also be fielded in the enclosure, and whiffle balls can be hit.

The batting cage lights have been repaired, and the cage will also be tarped to allow use during most rain storms. No more canceled practices due to rain.

We will hold a mandatory Player/Parent Information Night for the 2015 Los Gatos High School Softball program at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, October 8 in the Library. Of course no one will be excluded from participation in softball if you can’t show up, but I would strongly encourage that all families be represented. We need to kick off the softball season, which includes getting a head start on our fund-raising efforts. Last year, we had a very successful fund-raising year thanks to the support of many of you, and we need to keep the momentum going. Agenda items will include: • Outline of 2015 team alignment • Introduction of coaches • Preliminary schedule • Fields update (including Measure E plans) • Important dates • Fundraising • Communication • Preseason Conditioning and Clinics • New Varsity Uniform Policy • Team apparel • Questions To get everyone in the mood, here is a photo of all Los Gatos High School softball players in 2014. Amelia Dunn Makes Mercury-News High School Sports Hghlight Reel: Top Performances From Last Week

Amelia Dunn, Los Gatos softball: In three games, the outfielder went 8 for 10 with three walks. She began this week leading her team with 28 hits.

Varsity Storms Back to Beat Homestead 11-10 in 8 Innings

It will be hard to top this game as the game of the year. Down 10-7 going to the bottom of the eighth inning, the varsity showed no quit Friday against defending champion Homestead, hitting line drives all over the field and rallying for four runs to win 11-10. The players easily could have hung their heads after giving up the three runs in the top half of the eighth, but to their credit they did not. Instead, Amelia Dunn opened the inning with a line single to right-center. Rachel Vais hit a shot to left-center that skipped by the center fielder and rolled to the wall. Dunn scored and Vais reached second. With one out, Brytni Cook fouled off numerous pitches with two strikes and coaxed a walk. Ashley Mains then hit a two-strike double on a screaming line drive over the shortstop’s head to tie the game. Madeline Colombo hit an infield single between third and short, and Emma Rochel ended the game by bouncing a ground-rule double over the fence in left. Rochel was 3x5 in the game with a 2B and 3 RBI. Vais was 3x5 with a 2B and two RBI. Dunn was 1x3 with two walks and three runs scored. Mains had a double, Kaelyn Gasvoda a double and Maddy Lucey a double. The varsity followed that win up the next day with another extra-inning win, scoring three times in the International Tie-breaker to beat Monterey 8-6 in third-round action of the Charlie Miguel Tournament at West Valley College. Sam Holmgren hit a monsterous three-run home run in the first inning of that game and finished the day with two hits and six RBI. Dunn was 2x3, Vais 2x4 with two runs scored, Sydney Tucker 2x4 with a double and three runs, Mains 1x3 and Colombo 1x3. Los Gatos plays two leagues this week, facing Monta Vista Wednesday and Santa Clara Friday.

Varsity Scores 34 Runs in Two Games

The varsity softball team racked up two wins this week, scoring 34 runs on 30 hits to improve its record to 4-2. Rachel Vais had two hits, including a double, and Sydney Tucker had an RBI double to help lead the Cats to a 14-1 victory over Lincoln Wednesday in the team's first home game. The next day, Sam Holmgren had four hits, including a two-run home run and a two-run double in an 11-run first inning, as Los Gatos belted Santa Cruz 20-4. Madeline Colombo and Emma Rochel had three hits each in the win over Santa Cruz, and Maddy Lucey, Tucker and Ashley Mains had two hits each in the 21-hit attack. Los Gatos is off until next Friday, March 21, when it hosts rival Saratoga in its DeAnza League opener.

Field Prep Workers Uncover Commemorative Plaque

When Coach George decided he needed more room to stand behind the pitchers while coaching, it was time to trim the bushes near the bullpen area. And while trimming the bushes and ivy back at Saturday's work party, we discovered a commemorative plaque that had been covered up by the vegetation.

The plaque reads "In Memory of Audrey Helm Mullins Los Gatos Class of 1949."

Who is Audrey Helm Mullins, you ask?

Helm Field and Helm Gym at Los Gatos High School are named after Douglas White Helm, a legendary football, basketball and tennis coach and former principal at Los Gatos High. His daughter was Audrey Helm, who dated and later married her classmate Roy Mullins.

The Mullins had three sons who all attended Los Gatos High School. One of Audrey's grandchildren (daughter of son Dan) played and was a star pitcher for the Los Gatos softball team, graduating in 2004. Melissa pitched for LG Varsity for four years (2000-2004), but Audrey passed away before Melissa's senior year.

Audrey had attended every game Melissa played in from 2000-2003, becoming a fixture in the stands. Coaches Marlo Cortese and Trish Morse wanted to honor Audrey's dedication to the softball program by setting a memorial plaque in her honor at the softball field.

Although inadvertent, we are very happy to have uncovered the plaque and once again make it readily visible to all fans who come to a game.

Thanks to all the LGHS Softball players and parents who attended the annual field cleanup day yesterday. The field looks great. Dugouts are spotless. New home plate, first base and pitcher's rubber installed. Thanks to everyone who attended.

Big Softball Banners  

With an exciting season ahead, the fundraising team has been working hard to get all the pieces in place to support the program. The BANNER program is now ready!

With an “all hands on deck” approach, we hope to sell many great-looking 3’ x 6’ banners which will hang on the fences surrounding the softball field all season in support of our girls. Our sponsors who purchased a banner last year, will have an opportunity to re-hang that banner for a reduced tax-deductible donation, while new sponsors will have the opportunity to create a banner and/or donate in support of key program needs. The “SALES" form is straight-forward with the options, some banner examples, and our contact info to get the orders submitted. In order for the banners to be hung on Opening Day (Tuesday, March 4th) all orders must be turned in by Feb 18th. The receipt document, should be provided to the purchaser for every banner sale, as well as the list of last year’s sponsors.

We are asking every family to participate by selling at least 1 banner or receiving a donation – last year was our “maiden voyage” selling banners and we easily raised more than $5K - LET’S CRUSH THAT by getting started right away! Let me or Suzy Seandel know if you have any questions.

Field Prep Work Day Saturday

We will be holding our annual Field Prep Day at 9 a.m. Saturday, January 18 at the field. We need as many volunteers as we can get — both players and parents. It is our opportunity to get the field and surrounding areas ready for the upcoming season. Not only do we need volunteers, we need your tools as well. Things like rakes, shovels, wheelbarrows, blowers, and anything else you think we can use. At a minimum, I would like to accomplish the following:

• Put up outfield fence
• Put in new first base pegs (this might require some concrete)
• Dig out and put in new pitcher’s rubber and home plate
• Clean out dugouts (sweep/blow, clean off benches)
• Clean up bullpens
• Rake up all leaves around bleachers and power wash bleachers
• Clean out and organize storage areas
• Clean/disinfect refrigerator in storage room
• Test scoreboard and replace all burned out bulbs
• Deep spike drag on infield

The weather is supposed to be nice. Hopefully we will see you there and with enough help we can be all done by noon.

Just a reminder that conditioning will continue through the month of January up until our first practice/tryouts on Monday, 3 February. Cardio conditioning on Mondays and Wednesdays, and weights on Tuesdays and Thursdays. In addition, we can begin our on-field "clinics" starting Monday, Jan. 6. 12 of you have signed up so far.
